The steps below will guide you through the process of updating an Apple device, either wirelessly or using iTunes.
Before you get started:
- Back up your device to iCloud or iTunes.
- Ensure your device has enough free space to install the update. Tap Settings > General > Usage to determine how much space is available. If you don't have enough, use iTunes to create space, or remove content from your device.
- If using your device's Personal Hotspot for your computer's Internet connection, update your device wirelessly or connect your computer to another network.
- If you’re updating from iOS 4.3.x or earlier, you will need to update using iTunes.

1. Update your device wirelessly
The easiest way to update your device is wirelessly, also called 'over the air'; here’s how:
- Plug your device into a power source.
- Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap 'Download and Install' (refer to image below) to download the update. Updates may download automatically while your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source.
- Tap 'Install' (refer to image below) when the download completes to install the update now, or tap 'Later' to install the update at a later time.
- If your device is passcode enabled, it will ask you to enter the passcode before installing the update.
2. Update your device using iTunes
If you can't update wirelessly, or want to update with iTunes, follow the steps below:
- Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
- Plug the device into your computer.
- Within iTunes, select your device.
- In the 'Summary' pane, click 'Check for Update' (refer to image below).
- Click 'Download and Update'.
